Having maintained their way of life for 50,000 years, the Hadza now face a pressing threat of extinction due to a lack of basic human rights and protection under Tanzanian law. The Hadza are among the last remaining hunter-gatherer societies in the world. Their way of life provides invaluable insight into the way humans lived for 2 million years, up until the development of agriculture a mere 10,000 years ago. In other words, they make up the few people on this planet who still live as us humans have for 95% of our existence! The Hadza are true environmentalists, possessing extremely vital knowledge of nature and sustainability at a time when developed nations are consuming more resources than ever before. Of the 1,000 Hadza remaining today, only about 300 still live as true hunter-gatherers. The others have been forced to assimilate and are facing major problems adjusting into new lifestyles. The Tuko Project will address the current issues the Hadza face including protection of the land that has been theirs for thousands of generations.
